Adopting vs Buying from the Pet Store

Buying a dog or cat from a pet store is generally a short process. You fill out a short form and pay an adoption fee.

The process of adoption is more in-depth when going through an animal shelter.

It depends on the shelter's policy but it can take anywhere from one to seven days to adopt from an animal shelter.

When adopting from an animal shelter, the first step of the process involves finding a compatible pet for you and your family. This may involve a short trip to the local animal shelter or an online search of the available pets in your area.

Once you find a compatible pet that you would like to adopt, the screening process will begin. Some shelters will run a background check to determine if the applicant has a prior history of animal abuse on record. If not, the process will continue forward.

You may be required to connect with the animal before you are permitted to adopt. Your entire family will need to be involved in this step of the process. If you have children, you will want them to meet the animal while it is still housed at the shelter.

In some cases, the animal shelter will send someone out to your home to determine if it is suitable for raising a pet. Fortunately, this is rarely the case but it is important to know what you are getting into in advance.

Once the animal shelter makes the necessary determinations, you will be permitted to take your shelter pet home. Private animal shelters will oftentimes continue to check on the animal's well-being way after it is adopted.

Public shelters generally do not have enough staff on hand to make follow-up home visits.
